Remembering What I Once Knew

Have you ever heard the saying that little girls are either “kitty-girls” or “horse-girls”? Meaning that young girls will often get transfixed with the idea of having either a cat or horse as a pet.

Well, I was both. I remember, at the age of six, begging, begging, for a pony. I thought it perfectly reasonable that the horse would live in the carport of our San Francisco apartment building. ;)

But, by the time I was about nine, my interests had turned to cats—I wanted a kitten very very much (and I had the adorable kitten posters tacked up on my bedroom wall to prove it). Clearly, this was a much more doable option given our urban environs. But, there was one problem; I was one of those sniffly little kids with allergies. The kind of allergies that require lots of shots and visits to the doctor. And, as my mother reminded me, I was most allergic to kitties.

“I won’t be allergic to cats anymore!” I declared.

I meant it. I just decided to not be allergic. And, I haven’t had so much as a cat-related sniffle since that very moment.

I’ve been amazed a lot lately at how children just seem to understand how things work—here’s a story I wrote about meeting up with a very wise toddler—and, I remember how I believed, without a smidgeon of doubt, that I would no longer have those allergies.

It just had to be, because I wanted it so.

Paraphrasing Abraham (of Abraham-Hicks): Whatever you desire is available to you instantaneously, if you Allow it.

Do I, as an adult, always hold that kind of unflinching belief that what I desire will be there simply because I want it to be there? Nope, not always. But it’s good to remember that it’s possible.

    Hi Cardin,
I am thoroughly enjoying your site…I posted a link on my blog. I have a similar story. When I was a child I had terrible asthma…I would have very scary attacks, and my mother was really at the end of her rope. The doctor prescribed yet another medication that would hopefully help me. My mother, who has always been a proponent of mind over matter, told me with conviction that this medication was magical. She said this one was THE ONE that was going to work and make me feel all better. She said she gave it to me once, and I never had another asthma attack again. She loves to tell the story…and I think it is such a great example of how great faith can heal us.

Thanks again for your wonderful site. Come see me sometime on my blog if you get a chance:-)
